Whether you’re looking for a bag to carry groceries or a stylish accessory that can be worn with anything from dresses to jeans, a tote is a versatile piece. They come in many different designs, colors and materials to suit every taste. They’re also incredibly useful and reusable, so it’s easy to see why they’re such a popular item.
A Tote is a Large Bag that Can Hold Everything
One of the most common types of bags, totes are a great way to pack a lot of stuff in a small package. They have plenty of room for your groceries, a change of clothes and even a tablet or laptop to use on the go. They’re often made of canvas or other sturdy material to ensure that they last for years, and are a great alternative to plastic bags when you want to be more environmentally conscious.
The History of the Tote Bag
A tote bag dates back to the 17th century, but they weren’t commonly seen until the 1940s. They’re now a mainstay of modern fashion and can be found in stores all over the world. They’re a staple of every woman’s closet, so it’s important to pick the right one for you.
How to Choose a Tote Bag
The best way to choose a bag is to figure out what you’re going to be using it for and then look for a design that fits your needs. This will allow you to get the most bang for your buck and will make it easier to find the right size.
If you’re planning on using your tote to haul around heavy items, consider getting a bag with a longer handle. These handles are more durable and can be carried over your shoulder for added versatility.
These longer handles are also a great option if you’re planning on toting your bag with your child as you take them to the park or playground. These handles are also more comfortable to hold than shorter ones, which can be hard on your hands.
There are several different ways to style a tote bag, from the classic shopper-style bag to more creative designs like a pom-pom or tassel. You can also personalize your tote with a logo or other embellishments to make it truly unique and memorable.
How to Make a Tote Bag
The first step in making a tote bag is to cut out a rectangle from your fabric. This can be done using a ruler and scissors. Once the rectangular shape is completed, you can begin pinning and sewing it shut. Sew across the sides of the fabric, leaving about 1 mm of space at the edges.
Once you’ve finished securing the sides, you can start forming a gusset to give your tote more volume. Pin and sew across the bottom corners of the bag, creating two rounded corners that can then be secured with pins.
To create the handles, cut two 16” long strips of your fabric out and then sew them together with a double stitch at each end. This will help your tote to be a little more durable, and you can add any additional embellishments that you want to the ends of the straps as well.
